CREATE CORRECTLY WITH THE HARVARD STYLE

Here’s how to use Harvard Style citation, which is very popular in the English-speaking world and among social scientists. In the text, enter only the surname of the author, the year and the page number in brackets. In the bibliography you must provide a complete proof. This is usually organized in alphabetical order. Starting with the author’s last names from A like Altmeyer to Z like Zuse.

Whether the edition must be mentioned in the bibliography depends on your university. Most colleges are calling for this.

Important tip for the right citation

Obtain the rules for a term paper, bachelor thesis, or master thesis that apply at your university or department. There are often individual deviations from the Harvard Style (the most common citation) or personal preferences of the chair holder. It is important that you do not follow different specifications, but only one set of rules, so that your work is designed in a uniform way. For example, not a footnote for a proof of source, then a receipt in the text and finally at the end of the work under consecutive numbers.

Special cases when quoting

When citing there are many special cases. For example, if two authors have written a book together, both must be mentioned in the quote. A text from a newspaper is quoted / documented differently than a book. There are different rules for online sources. There are exceptions to some rules. We have presented these citation rules as a PDF in an overview.

Quoting in the housework, bachelor thesis or master thesis
Proper citation is sometimes laborious, laborious and seems annoying. But put yourself in the other side, in that of the reader or your examiner. Without reference to the origin of the quoted thought in the original, the reader can not tell whether it is your consideration or that of another.

How do examiners / professors check the quotes?

When evaluating z. B. a bachelor thesis, the examiner will review individual citations. As it is regularly stated in expert reports “The quotations and sources were randomly controlled. Site information and author’s name are partly incomplete. “

Your examiner may also check if you have correctly reproduced the context of the quote. Maybe he’ll read an interesting book he first found in your work. He sets off on the search, with a bit of luck – or if you have quoted correctly – he finds the original text in a database or in the electronic library.

But if you did not quote correctly, you need good luck, or in the worst case, you will not be lucky, because you even misclassified the year of publication. Then there is no verifiability.

What happens if I leave out quotes?

Forgetting to quote a quote is human. We are not robots. You’ll probably get a small deduction on the grade and your examiner will think you worked a bit sloppy under time pressure. However, if you have written off pages or copy & paste, the examiner will notice. With the change of the author also changes the language style.

Perhaps he notices that a text section is suddenly elegantly formulated, or he notices that he has already read the content before. In a bachelor thesis or master thesis written with “copy & paste”, the examiner will be awarded a “failed” grade. Whether you may write a second paper in this case is questionable.

It is the right citation to the verifiability, z. As the author, the context or the correct reproduction. Especially in student work such as a housework or the bachelor thesis is not expected that the author finds out something new. In this respect, you diligently search literature and like to use the ideas contained therein – but: Cite the authors of these works necessarily correct!
